40s and 50s still jobless

Gilbert Goh Keow Wah wrote to Today complaining that many of his friends were still jobless and have difficulties getting a job even when they were well qualified and with a breath of experience. How could this be? The msm have been publishing great statistics like hundreds of thousands of jobs were created and unemployment is at a record low that employers have to raise salaries to ridiculous amount to retain employees. I think his letter is just a small anomaly. Not representative of the real situation on the ground. Not real.

There must have been a misunderstanding. Cannot be. Just look through the classified section in the ST each day and you will be shocked to see so many vacancies waiting to be filled. Maybe Mr Goh's friends are waiting for the million dollar jobs?

There are tons of work on offer in S'pore.

"The world owes me a living" attitude is alive and well. If you really want to works and are willing to accept anything in the job market, you will be employed.

In Oz, the low-end jobs are referred to as McJobs, with reference to the lowly burger-flipping jobs at McDonald's.

Still, study after study has shown, that if one in working—even in a lowly job—the long term benefits—economic, social, personal and psychological are far superior than staying unemployed and blaming the world for one's station and state in life.

matilah, the people who wrote that letter are willing to work even with lower expectations. but because of their age and because they are singaporeans, they are unemployable so far.

I don't believe that for one instant.

And you are irresponsible for not checking your facts.

There is no such thing as a fully-functioning adult being "unemployable" in a vibrant market economy.

S'pore still imports cleaners, labourers, supermarket workers etc. Locals can do these jobs, but they WON'T. Building and construction is going off the charts. There is plenty of work. All one has to do is to not be choosy.

it is not a matter of belief. these are people who have a name and owned up to it and wrote to the msm. unless you are saying that they are lying. in which case i bet you are damn wrong as their cases could be easily verified.

and if you still insist that you don't believe, it is like saying that you don't believe that the sun will rise from the east. then i can't argue with you.

it is a misfortune if we have to make our qualified engineers or experienced executives and managers to work as cleaners or construction workers. it is a tragedy to the individual and the country. these people have said it clearly that they don't mind downgrading and getting lesser pay.

expecting to become a cleaner or construction worker is unreasonable.

Well, I guess we'll have to agree to disagree on this one. In any case, I wish those folks best of luck.

WOW redbean. Now you are putting words in the meaning of my posts (an analogue of "putting words in my mouth"), and doing my thinking for me.

Spectacular! Got any other magic tricks you do for an encore?
