The obsolescence of a once mighty political party

Is it because it is living the proverbial wisdom of not outliving the third generation? Or is it a party that outlives itself? The PAP is looking more like an obsolete party working itself out of favour from a populace that once held it in high esteem and in awe. Within a brief period of a few years, the awe and confidence just simply disappeared.

I hope I am wrong, but as a political observer, this is exactly what I am seeing. The PAP has lost the support of the people except for some diehards. It still has a lot of yesterday’s glory to crow about. But the future, the way it is leading the country forward, is treacherous and slippery. It is looking very unsustainable in many areas.

The ridiculous high remuneration at the top for deserving and undeserving incumbents cannot be kept going for too long without a healthy money printing machine. And this machine comes in the form of more migrants, higher fees and prices for public housing and public services and taxes. And an ever rising cost of living but a depression of wages at the lower end. It is simply a very vicious cycle that will ground to a halt in an ever greater speed. Tell the people that this is the way it is?

The situation is such that the PAP/govt has dug itself deeper and deeper into a bottomless pit and unable to extricate itself. The high salaries cannot come down without a rebellion from the recipients as they have lived it up, incurred heavy mortgages, and used to a lifestyle difficult to maintain. The high property prices cannot come down without destroying the wealth and savings of the owners. The high cost of living cannot be brought down without hurting the economic growth numbers. The high import of foreign workers cannot be reduced without affecting the industries and economy and to support the high salaries at the top.

It still looks good to some who are enjoying and benefitting from it and blind to the tight rope they are balancing on. No mis-step as the fall is steep. But they are oblivious to what is happening below, the masses that have to deal with the rapid changes of a very expensive city and lifestyle without the accompanying increases in income. Whatever increases will be eaten up immediately by inflation.

How long can the good time last before the bust? Those who are at the fringes are seeing and living the danger facing them. Those that are comfortable are not. However, the cracks are appearing everywhere. Land for cemeteries must go. Land for nursing homes, hospices and caskets are needed but where to build them when the competition and demand for space are growing with an unrestrained population growth to keep economic numbers looking good? Living with the dead, the sick and the old as neighbours will be a norm no matter how unpleasant. There is just no where else to go. The price of growth and growing the economy/population at all cost, to sustain a high living low thinking, no tomorrow or tomorrow will never come lifestyle will have to be paid sooner or later.

And where are the super talented leaders to lead the people? Why is there a feeling of a void, that not many are worthy or being regarded as worthy to lead and command the respect of the people? Many are looking so clumsy and inept and questionable. A side effect of scrapping the bottom of the barrel?

As the party keeps trotting down the path of no return, it is distancing itself more and more from the common people, unable to understand them and forcing them to accept that that’s the way it is, and that’s the way it should go, and be. The income gap is widening. The visions of the rulers and the ruled are widening at heady speed, heading in different directions. When both rulers and ruled do not share the same dream, one must become obsolete or go.

The rousing reception of the WP in Hougang in the by election was once the exclusive right of the PAP. The people were celebrating their victory with an outpouring of unrestrained joy. It was hallelujah! The contrast, the PAP contingent was greeted by cold stares and a few polite waves, a very unfamiliar situation that they were not used to, and would have to get used to as a new future dawns. It is a new phenomenon and a new reality. It is coming to an end so fast.

Just my observation.

Agree with the writer. Worst is the ruling party just refuses to change and still forces their policies down to the throat of the commoners.

this is such a depressing piece. what makes it worse is that it makes so much sense. the future is indeed bleak on the route we are taking.

sporeans need to fight back themselves, to stop depending on others, such as political parties, to do it for them.

the question is, are we willing to sacrifice? are we willing to put in the hard work? we have become such wimps!

what will it take to galvanise us into action? to spur us on?

The people that will resist to changes are those S'pore employers who pay themselves at a rate in which they can own 1 or more condo/landed property per year.

They will at all cost ensure they get to pay the stagnated decade old workers wages while they own a series of expensive vehicles like Ferrari, Posche or 7 series Beamers as well.

One can hardly control visible outright disgust, when during meetings, these employers reiterated the need to keep employees wages down.

That goes the same for our millionaire ministers too.

Successful but lacks conviction(support wise) on the PAP side. Like after a heavy meal, your stomach is full but you just feel ....unhealthy. Something is not right.

The Abysmal Singapore, Temasek, and GIC Balance Sheet
Posted on May 28, 2012

Last Thursday, we analyzed the Singapore balance sheets for 2009 and 2011 arriving at an implied valuation for GIC. What really causes concern is that despite claims Temasek grew at 22% annually, Singapore Inc. managed only $30 billion SGD of net asset growth. The growth in assets on the Singapore, Inc. balance sheet was mostly offset by a rapid growth in debt. In other words, Singapore, Inc. was borrowing heavily to buy assets.

When you take a closer look at the the balance sheet things get even worse. Singapore Inc., Temasek, and GIC’s performance when placed against other broader indexes are quite poor. For instance, while the S&P 500 and Strait Times Index grew at 25% and 29% annually, Temasek grew at a less impressive 22%. However, that is only part of the story. Let’s look at this in a table to make things easier.

To make matters worse, total Singapore asset growth was a paltry 7% annually. However, if we strip out the growth in public debt during this time period, the picture begins to look down right worrying. In a period when global stock markets were booming at 25-30% annually, net asset growth at GIC and Temasek grew by a total (TOTAL) of 4.2%!!

Let me simplify. If you invested in $100 in the S&P 500 or the Strait Times Index on April 1, 2009, on April 1, 2011 you would have either $156 or $165. However, if you invested that same $100 in Singapore, Inc., you would have between $104 and $116 depending on which measure you prefer to use.

In an absolute best case scenario, Singapore, Inc. is not even coming close to matching market returns or even covering its cost of capital from borrowing CPF funds.

How you invest your money is your business. However, how your government invests your money is your business. We can only hope that the government of Singapore will be completely honest with its citizens and that people will demand answers for how their hundreds of billions of dollars are being invested.

"The rousing reception of the WP in Hougang in the by election was once the exclusive right of the PAP.", unquote.

It WAS and IS EXACTLY such exuberance from Sinkies that has brought about the situation today. Many that were happily buying into the propaganda then have now not only regretted, some have become very querulous with the same people they were adulating before. If there are pockets of present Sinkies feeling good similar to the sentiment of the past, it is to be expected. Some do get to enjoy the spoils. What is lacking seems to be the consistency of the fence-sitters. They follow the direction of fortune instead of values.

Unless the infrastructures in Sin are made of Gold, how much value can this tiny dot commands in future?
All the infrastructures require maintenance, meaning money needed. Lack of maintenance means rots and rots mean the beginning of the end. Can Sin escape it's fate?

Anon 3:12,

Making analysis and observations are what the academics and politican observers are doing daily. Just don't tell lies, don't scandalise people, don't accuse people of cheating or wrongdoings, of corruption or anything that you have no proof of.

My assessment of what the party is becoming is not saying that the party is commiting some sins or crimes. It is just how it behaves, and how the people are reacting and a bit of speculations or guessing on what the future could be. These are fair comments.

Chua Chin Leng aka redbean said...

Anob 3:31 is also making a factual comments of the infrastructure that we are building. It costs moneny and more money. Maintaining them is not cheap.

Many of the private property owners, with their luxurious fittings, they must continuously pay for their maintenance. The old rich that are not increasing their incomes will have a hard time upkeeping their ageing properties as maintenance is very high.

yupsup, powerful men are in a position to engineer a state of distress and browbeat the entire nation into submission to perpetuate absolute power

Chua Chin Leng aka redbean said...

Sinkies must know what can be said and what cannot be said. What is right and what is wrong to say.

Saying ministers salaries are too high is not a crime. It is an opinion. But saying the ministers are corrupt is not acceptable. It is an accusation that needs proof.

Saying someone is an idiot is debatable. Can be a slander or can be a fact.

Saying someone visited Geylang can be a fact but can also be a slander if cannot be proven.

Saying property prices is very high is not a crime.

Saying that one disagrees with a policy is not a crime.

It is certainly very true that Singaporeans are very pragmatic. When they benefit and enjoy their livings, they are ever willing to turn a blind eye and even forgiving to prevailing flaws, potential dangers and future hazards. They will revere their rich parents, political leaders and heap praises for them. Even the shits in them smell sweet. THEY PRACTICALLY JUST CHOOSE TO OVERLOOK EVERY DANGER, CURRENT OR FUTURE.

THEN, when shits hit the fan, they scream foul play, everyone is wrong except the accuser. How can we blame him/her, one is brought up in this society to be who he/she is. What kind of upbringing have we inculcated to the people in Sin?

Anonymous said...

So sad. When sinkies do not know their right to freedom of speech and so frighten to say anything.

Some sinkies may even think that they will be arrested if they say they are against GST or ERP or COE.

A cowed citizenry is as good as slavery.

Chua Chin Leng aka redbean said...

Anon 3:54, not really. The people are pragmatic and reasonable. They expect the govt to do the right thing and also sometimes not the right thing.

On balance, they could accept a mixed bag of things as long as the good is more than the bad. When the bad becomes unacceptable and tip the balance, it is only reasonable that they will stand up to say know.

Just like voting for a ruling party. They will go on supporting the ruling party as long as their lives are improving. When it is not, it is their right to vote for change of govt. This is democracy. Choose the govt that serves you and not you serving the govt.

The rich will continue to support the govt that makes them rich. The poor will only support the govt that improves their lives. If not, they will use their votes to influence the govt or change the govt. That's the way it should be.

The Man, once treated liked god and He is now despised. And the people who treated him as described above had reminded him of the change in Him and or even stopped him from going wayward, such people are fair.
BUT, if in good time, the Man is revered liked god and He is treated with disdain by the same people later, then it is the fault of the worshipers, not the human god.

Chua Chin Leng aka redbean said...

It is up to the people to judge their leaders and to revere or dismiss them. A good example is Mao. He united China and brought pride to a broken people. He also made many mistakes, some quite disastrous. It is up to the Chinese people to decide his place in their history.

Sing me a song, you're a singer
Do me a wrong, you're a bringer of evil
The Devil is never a maker
The less that you give, you're a taker
So it's on and on and on, it's Heaven and Hell, oh well
The lover of life's not a sinner
The ending is just a beginner
The closer you get to the meaning
The sooner you'll know that you're dreaming
So it's on and on and on, oh it's on and on and on
It goes on and on and on, Heaven and Hell
I can tell, fool, fool!
Well if it seems to be real, it's illusion
For every moment of truth, there's confusion in life
Love can be seen as the answer, but nobody bleeds for the dancer
And it's on and on, on and on and on....
They say that life's a carousel
Spinning fast, you've got to ride it well
The world is full of Kings and Queens
Who blind your eyes and steal your dreams
It's Heaven and Hell, oh well
And they'll tell you black is really white
The moon is just the sun at night
And when you walk in golden halls
You get to keep the gold that falls
It's Heaven and Hell, oh no!
Fool, fool!

For an American newspaper, saying LHL is the son of LKY is not acceptable although it is the truth. Any one who takes my money to pay himself an unconscionably high salary is corrupt. It is not an accusation if I say the ministers are corrupt. But I won't say because our courts will make me bankrupt if any minister sue me.

Does it mean, when the people say don't build Nursing home here because I dont want to see old people (60 yos above) groaning, and blocking my wind, then you dont build, otherwise I will vote against you ?

Does it mmean, when the people say too many FTs, then you turn off the tap immediately ? Now, even the WP say we need FTs after the election, a 180 degree turn.

The key word here is moderation. Not just shoving everything down. We have got immigration since day01. It's not something new. But at this rate of 25,000 per yr for next 5 yrs when we already got something like 3 million vs 2 million AT THIS MOMENT? Come on lah. Is it not madness then what? No one is against immigration per se. We don't see the world as either in black or white. Sensible people dont.

Sometimes I really respect your stamina able to churn a few articles which st times are quite thought provoking and controversial attracting the opposites - for and against you! Yes it's quite a challenge and tiring! I'm speaking as a fellow blogger. Just like you, sometimes I just feel like stopping altogether or just privatize my blog for my frens and select readers only. It's really a langgar tiang job. There are all kinds of people out there - the good, bad and ugly. Usually I take those comments with names seriously. Those hiding behind anon I don't take seriously. Sometimes I just bother to answer them. If you want serious and meaningful engagement come out in the open and talk like a man, no need to hide behind anon and take potshots which is always the easy part. If I were you, I will just block those irritating anon and not waste bandwidth. Conserve your energy by churning out better articles with more insightful analysis. No need to langgar with them cuz they just want to tire you and sap your energy. Only take those with a name seriously. Think over what I said. I expect to get whack from retards here. But that's life. There will always be this type around. Can't help it. This is the kind of world we live in. Really langgar!

Hi Gintai and Patriot,

In the internet there are all kinds of bloggers with different agenda. There are also good reasons for some to use anonymous for their posts. I can respect that.

The quality of a blogger is in the posting. When they post, you know who they are and what they are. This no one can hide.

Many are very clear and objectives, some just want to have some fun, some have an axe to grind, some are paid to post.

Let's enjoy this great innovation that gives the common people a voice. It breaks the monopoly and stranglehold of main media to do as they please.

just read your comment red bean. You are speaking for many sporeans. PAP have definitely lost it. 'Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely' Power/ego rots as PAP has stopped listening to the people, ages ago, doing what it thinks is right as life becomes harder for the average person, making so many irreversible mistakes. Was it right to play god many years ago tying women's tubes willy nilly. Does anyone think they can hit a highspot of creation with no consequences? That started a demographic chain - falling birthrates and we had to open our gates to instant PRs.Joke is PRs also dont wanna breed - numbers are still down, & small wonder, its still too expensive to bring up kids here, unlike countries like Sweden where social services cooperate to make birthrates go up. So make it worse by ensuring that FTs n PRs now make up 3 million of our 5million people with 70% of jobs (latest bloomberg figures.

Massaged GDP growth rates are not a reason to vote for a PAP so now out of touch with the suffering of middle Sporeans including genetic engineering that other countries would not do, to attract frankenstein scientists
to boost GDP. Our forefathers built this country from the sweat of their immigrants' brows and yet, the honest, hardworking sporeans are stood aside to create a more divisive haves and have nots while strangers take our jobs and our hospital beds have no room for our old. The zillions lost by imcompetent ones at Temasek or GIC are masked. Just 10% of that will buy many needed social services for an aging population and those too old, sick or destitute. PAP continue to give excuses of not breeding a social welfare mentality. We know that most baby boomers have pride and hard work seared into their DNA. Have you not seen aged people bent over, hands shaking clean tables?
A dictatorial PAP lacking basic humanity cannot understand that allocating 10% of lost billions to a new welfare economy for the aged will generate a new economy. Its impossible for it to change policies and tactics as it would mean a total turnaround of last 47 years. So the writing IS on the wall for REAL CHANGE.
