2030 the Good Year for Sinkies

In the year 2030, with 6.9m rich and prosperous Sinkies, PRs and foreigners, Sin City will be the crown jewel of the world. Sinkies will still be the richest people in the world, enjoying world class facilities and all the material comfort available. All the PRs and foreigners will be living happily and in harmony with the Sinkies, something like the paradise where lions and lambs will eat and play together.

Are there any conditions attached? This is too good to be true. And anything that is too good to be true deserves a second thought. The recent cases of gold trading companies paying out 2% monthly interest and all the great profits of toxic notes and bonds were also too good to be true. What is the catch? Can all the Sinkies be PMETs and earn half a million or more in annual income to live it up with the great life? How much will it cost to buy a HDB flat or a COE? How much will a plate of char kway teow or a ride in a taxi or any form of public transport? What will be the cost of living like for such a grandiose lifestyle? Would it be only for the rich or for the average Sinkies?

I dare not ask about hospitalization and how much the Medisave Minimum Sum would be or the CPF savings. All I know is that nothing is for free. There is no free lunch, even today.

One condition for this happy dream to come true is to continue to vote PAP into power to carry out this plan all the way to 2030.

So, to cater for the aging population and tax burden, we have to import more people. What will happen in 2030, when those imported people also grow old? Another white paper to push the population to 9.9 million by 2050? And after 2050, what next? Ad nauseum.

As I said, no problem. Replace all the good class bungalows in District 9, 10 and 11 with HDB estates with 50-storey blocks, or even 100-storey blocks. Ditto with the golf courses and the offshore islands.

I think the government has just given the GE2016 mandate to the WP.
January 30, 2013 9:29 am ///

Hurray, the government is taking up my proposal to redevelop the golf courses into housing estate. Small victory.

Now, for the big one. If the PAP is sincere, it should also bull-doze District 9, 10 and 11 and redevelop them into 100-storey HDB estates. After all, good class bungalows are very, very, very inefficient use of land - too low density. Since we are competing with Hong Kong for the title of the densest (I leave it to readers whether we are referring to the density of housing, or the density of government minds and brains), we should make full use of Dist 9,10 & 11.

Good morning rb..the government always talking about making hard/tough choices for the good of the people...so...which is the tough choice..to get rid of excessive baggage n downsize the economy to comfortable limits or suka suka let all those who want to come, come..I think our jokers just want the easy way out!! Which minister in the present government can be equated to having the foresight of GKS n HON ..GKS turned Jurong from swampland to industrial town...our present bunch talk about turning golf clubs to housing estates...just ain't got it..hehe...so why the haste in white paper? Methink the people already here and it requires 17 years to put everything in place...ahhh Paradise gone mad....

Would it be better, better quality of life, to recreate more space and keep the population at this level since there is no turning back? What is the point of reclaiming more land, more mrt lines, more housing only to stuff them up with more people? LPPL.

Anonymous said...

Now who said that we have not enough land so our old folks should move to JB old folks homes?

Anonymous said...

For so much foresight and planning ability, they suddenly realised they can reclaim land lor. So can reserve some land for our oldies to live in peace and near their families?

/// “And we are confident because we have time, because we are talking about the future – 2020, 2025, 2030 – and as planners our mantra is the Boy Scouts’ motto – ‘prepare for the worst but hope for the best’.” ///
Khaw Boon Wan

Since it's unlikely Khaw or I will be around in 2030 to be answerable if the planning is delusional ....

It's better if Singaporeans be prepared for the worst (an incompetent PAP leadership)
and hope for the best (strong Opposition Parties who are ready to form the next government).

So how to help prepare for the worst?
Vote Opposition.
This will give us a chance to assess their capabilities and truthfulness.

Downside risks are big for the extended 2030 Vision especially with the poor execution and increased difficulties experienced by Singaporeans in past 10 years:
1. Infrastructure failures & insufficiency.
2. Disrupted social harmony from quick massive influx from all kinds of background and alien cultures.
3. Intense additional competition in schools & workplace.
4. Increasing disconnect between policy makers & citizens.
5. Increasing wage disparity & skewed wealth creation & extreme distribution concentrated to the top 1% to 10%.
6. FTs taking advantages of loop holes & benefits in FTs policies at expense of citizens.
7. Overall unhealthy social, economic & political climate & atmosphere.
8. Supporters of ruling party are mainly activists & interested parties. Supporters of opposition are mainly citizens. Gap is widening.
9. Uncontrollable asset and property inflation both from domestic pricing policies and extreme external global interest rate policies.
10. Entrenched low productivity growth, with many businesses sustained by low wages FTs.
11. High percentage of foreign capital and foreign labor resulting in huge potential downside volatility risks.

All these are not good for Singapore in the short-run and long-run.
Correct errors, manage situation before talking about more FTs maybe a better choice. Hastiness and impatience may cause social, political and economic bankruptcy and is not good for everyone.

A Singapore Fairy Tale
======================

Since HDB flats are "subsidized".
And new citizens are allowed to buy HDB flats.
Aren't all these new immigrants a "raid on our reserves"?

Tony. Tony.
Your custodial duty beckons.
Tony. Tony? Tony?

Somebody. Send in the emergency medical equipment.
Or maybe the cheaper, better, faster solution .... honk when you drive pass the Istana to awaken the sleeping occupants.

Not true. Some the complaining "anti-progress" crowd/ mob -- they are going to feel butt-hurt., and they'll deserve it.

For the rest of the rational, adult and mature-minded folks, you won't even notice the difference.

If my grandad was alive and I told him Singapore population is over 5 million, he would think I'm bluffing him.

It's the frame of reference. The old folks had a different frame of reference; as do the people living in the present era.

I served NS, my sons served NS, and their sons are going to serve NS. This fucking govt said my sons cannot buy HDB because they are high income earners and fucking new citizens never serve NS are all happily buying HDB flats.

Vote this govt out for the sake of Singaporeans.

Good Meritocracy - Bad Meritocracy

Quote from Donald Low's
Good Meritocracy - Bad Meritocracy

(PAP Elitism Meritocracy)/Wall Street meritocracy breeds a pernicious, self-justifying, entitlement narrative. For example, Wall Street bankers justified the decision to pay themselves millions in bonuses from the bailout monies they received from taxpayers on the grounds that not doing so would result in talent leaving the financial industry. The kind of meritocracy practised in Wall Street breeds a belief among its beneficiaries that they are entitled to their rewards, that the system is inherently just, and that inequality is a natural consequence of an efficient and normatively desirable system. They view those who have not succeeded in the system as slothful or lacking in talent or merit – and undeserving of state support. It therefore increases the rich’s resistance to the redistributive policies needed to tackle rising inequality. Over time, such a meritocratic system entrenches inequality and immobility; the risks of this society becoming permanently more stratified and divided by class are also much greater.

Quote from Donald Low's
Good Meritocracy - Bad Meritocracy

Another important lesson from the crisis is that not only do markets sometimes fail, but the rules and institutions (PAP)
designed to anticipate and correct these market failures can also fail.

In a healthy democracy (and meritocracy), the WATCHMAN also needs to be WATCHED. This calls for eternal vigilance on the part of citizens and civil society.

It means creating strong safeguards against regulatory capture, increasing transparency and public accountability, ensuring the (political) independence of public institutions, and maintaining a healthy distance between regulatory agencies and the corporate entities they regulate.

Errr...good luck with that one. It has rarely worked. Most people are too engaged with their lives to worry about "eternal vigilance".

Ben Franklin was a wonderful, idealistic person. But like many who wax lyrical about "freedom and liberty", he was such a dreamer.

You're a better man than I. I do not have access to complete information, and the ground is always changing.

I also would like to prepare for the worst, but I have no idea what "the worst" will be. Human beings are ridiculously bad at predicting the future, but we do get lucky "guesses" now and then ... completely by chance.

So I've chosen to live in sweet denial, and enjoy myself until my biology ceases to function. And then the worms can eat me up, and friends can reminisce my passing, and enemies can celebrate it.

Even the bacteria and worms benefit...and the rest of the beings up the food chain.

See, something for everyone. ;-)
