Obsolescence of citizenship

I have written quite a number of articles calling for more jobs and recognition for being Singaporeans and being citizens of this island we called home. This, to me, is a place that our forefathers have turned around, from a British colony and a not so well developed country of the Third World to the Jewel of Southeast Asia. Thought we should be proud of what have been done by our forefathers and should claim credit for it.

Looks like I am just a voice in the wilderness and not many people care two hoots what was done in the past. The honour and the people that needed to be rewarded are the new foreign talents, the foreign workers and nothing to do with Singaporeans, the daft and lazy and untalented and undeserving citizens should just shift out and be replaced.

Many are getting sick of the message that I thought Singaporeans should be thinking and talking about for their own well being and the well being of their future generations. The pathetic turnout at Hong Lim is a point to ponder. And the many annoying views against the protection of Singaporeans and their jobs have appeared more and more frequently in my blog and also elsewhere in the social media and the main media.

Singapore is a place for the talented regardless of nationalities. All the good and top jobs must go to the most talented and deserving. I spent one whole night meditating over this call and have been enlightened by the power of the logic and reasoning. Yes, Singapore and the citizens would be nothing if we are narrow minded, trapped by our little pride and nationalistic fervour, to want to reserve the good and top jobs for not so talented Singaporeans. For the survival of Singapore, we should allow the talents of the world to come in and take over the top jobs in the island to drive the economic growth for the good of the future of the island.

I have finally come around with my rustic, naive and archaic thinking that we should be thinking for the good of Singaporeans. No, that is a bad idea, a regressive idea. The lesser talented and daft have no place for the future, citizens or no citizens. The future is for the best talented.

Singapore is the city of the future for the talents of the world. Imagine the kind of city Singapore will be if all the top talents are here and all the dafts are departed for their own good. It will truly live up to the expectation of what a futuristic and fantasy utopia of the rich and most well endowed human beans the world ever produced.

To move into this direction, let’s do away with citizenship. The new term to replace citizenship can be locals or residents. These are people specially qualified by their talents to live here. The rest will be temporary workers, the no talents. The first exercise will be to select the Singapore citizens and PRs and sort them out, and divide them along this line. The non locals or non residents, ex Singaporeans included, can still be rewarded to become locals or residents, if they can prove themselves over the years, that they are deserving talents.

No job in the country is reserved for citizens, as there will be no such category left. Taxi drivers will also lose their reserve occupation to drive taxis. At the top, all govt posts, including President, PM and Ministers will also be open to all locals and residents. In this way only the very best in the world can take over these positions. No half baked citizens can aspire or conspire to keep these jobs to themselves. And there will be free mobility of talents in and out of the island, based on nothing but their talents or no talents.

Singapore will be the best place to live in, for the best talented. The lesser talented and not so talented, please shift out.

Are you talented enough to be a local or resident? Good luck to you.

Well said. With more and more foreigners and new citizens in decision making positions (in public bodies and private corporations) and with the number of the wealthy ft's overtaking the number of wealthy locals (wealth is power), what Redbean is 'proposing' will jolly well come true. The Death of the Singaporean might be sooner than we think. If the majority of Singaporeans are still in slumber or if they don't act, we'll end up like the boiled frog syndrome. I'll wake up one day and have to call myself Jaswan.

Talent is overrated. The term should be replaced with the ideas of being PRODUCTIVE,SELF-RELIANT and PERSONALLY RESPONSIBLE.

One thing is for sure: citizenship/ residence/ working in one single cuntree is fast becoming OBSOLETE.

Instead of complaining like a whiney little bitch, redbean -- with his vast life experience in many fields -- could do better by offering real-world, personally achievable SOLUTIONS for those who feel "stuck" instead of singing the same old lame-ass song about how delinquent the govt is by doing what they do.

All govts are made up of assholes who don't give a shit about you -- as an individual. If you're hoping for your life to change for the better from "govt policy" you are a BLOODY FOOL and are living in pure denial of the fact that your life is your business -- whether you live or die vastly depends on your thinking and subsequent actions.

The times, they are a changing.

Do not let this happen to the fellow Singaporeans.

- I totally agree. The cabinet here treats this small island as a corporation only not a cumtree. Their only goal is to milk everyone, everything for their own assets enhancement. It is better for you to cash out and migrate. At least you have the chance to smell the roses from your garden, ease your blood pressure rather than to go against the regime and risk everything. It is not worth (altho I will miss your blogs) cos the people here are too kiasi, kiasu, kia mata. One day, some cumtree will come and takeover the regime and then it will be too late.

Hi All,

Since time immemorial, societies yearn for wise leaders and good governance.

The longest dynastic era in Chinese history is the Chou Dynasty ( BC 1046 to BC 256 ) which lasted almost 800 years.

One of the key figures in the founding of Chou Dynasty ---Jiang Zi Ya 姜子牙 --- was said to be instrumental in influencing the thoughts and governance of several generations of Chou Kings from BC 1046 to BC 772 during the Western Chou period.

Subsequent Chinese philosophical thoughts during the period BC 771 to BC 256 ( Eastern Chou period ) such as Confucianism, Taoism, Art of War etc were said to have originated from Jiang Zi Ya who was also affectionately known as Jiang Tai Gong ( 姜太公 ). Incidentally, in Chinese historical records, his life span was documented as BC 1156 to BC 1017, living to an extremely ripe old age of 139 years old.

Below are three of his legendary quotes for good governance of states:

Our students would benefit immeasurably if they are able to learn some of the great works of the best historical philosophers, thinkers and strategists from Asia, first hand not through translation from a western perspective be it French, German or English.

The produndity of Asian philosophy from China and India is of high intellectual standing but under appreciated here despite it's part of our cultural roots.

Hi there,

Such thinking may not be shared by the majority in Sg, especially the decision-makers.

But I do appreciate like-minded people like you who understand the many gems in the wisdom of our ancestors.

Definitely it is a big waste not to enable some of our students, if not all, to have conducive opportunities to learn such profound and rich cultural roots and heritage.

Most of the time, I believe schools under MOE's programmes at the most just have a half day trip to Pagoda or Smith Street or Serangoon Rd as an attempt for such learning.

Surely, such are not concerted efforts that would allow the students to significantly attain a good grounding in the wisdom of some of our great ancient ancestors.

When Vernacular was taken out as a medium of instruction abd learning some over 30 years ago, it spelled the demises of Oriental Cultures. No more Chinese, Tamil and Malay School which naturally focussed much of the individual cultures in the contents of their studies and education.

Me would not blame the younger generations about their ignorance or lack of interest in things Oriental. When their Mother Tongues got bastardized, their Roots started rotting and within a generation or two, the people know not their indigenous cultures.

Me suspects that Vernacular was taken off from school syllabus for political reason. Another obvious reason was that those leaders who were the pioneer batch of Rulers were educated in English. Be it LKY, GOH KENG SWEE, RAJARATNAM OR TOH CHIN CHYE, none of them were even conversant with Chinese. Rajaratnam might had been good at the Indian Language. But, been typical English educated, liked his Fellow Cabinet Members, they behaved banyak atas(Aristocratic/exclusive). It was obvious to me that they wanted/want to be acknowledged as Rulers. Even today this is obvious. See for yourself the cleaning up, the busloads of welcome parties and how many body guards are whenever a parliamentarian moves around.

Queerly, me used to imagine the Late Rajaratnam in a traditional Indian Jhoti. Thought he would looked good and handsome in one. My imagination was much aroused by his very distinct Indian look.

Anyway, since the Day Lee Kuan Yew chucked away the Vernacular of the People, English Language and Western Cultures grow, take root and bloom. The Oriental Culture is on the verge of extinction.

The Sin Rulers were very successful in killing our heritage, however I must say that they were successful only because majority of the People agreed, bought over or were overwhelmed.

How many know Yuefei, Qiyuan, Mencius, Su Dong Po, Li Bai, Mao Zedong, Chou Enlai, Sanskrit, Hinduism/Buddhism, Bhagavad, Nehru, Gandhi or even Kamasutra?

Do Singapore Malays remember the history of the Malay Archipelago? Hang Tuah, the Princess of Langkawi etc?

Me likes to assert that Sinkies do not regret nor feel sad about the loss of their culture as the raping was done by their very own Leaders.

Hi Patriot,

I suppose the younger generation would appreciate your effort and time in articulating your aphorism of what could have been the reasons behind the erosion.

For those born after 1965 including myself, we may not be born yet or are too young to know all of the intricate and myriad policies in the past that are intertwined holistically.

But at least the younger generation, through your time and effort, are provided the opportunity to see from another perspective and at the end of the day form their own opinion on this matter.

Good Morning Edmund Lim and All.

Language Policy had been hotly and robustly debated especially when Nanyang University was subjected to change in status. Do google for Language Policy In Singapore, which i just did.
Me feels that there are just too many justifications and just as many disagreements making the Subject highly controversial. Therefore, it is best for those interested to go through the History of the Policy personally.

Language Policy was/is very subjective and it is best for those interested to read it up in the Web.
My Afore-mentioned Comment was to express a very personal sentiment about the Policy and its effects on the social and political aspects on our live(life). There were much debate about the merit of the Policy and nothing unanimous has been achieved thus far. It remains highly controversial and shall be so infinitely.

Do read the very extensive dissertation in the Web to form your own view and opinion.

No citizenship is to remove a divisive line that separates the people of the world. If this is obsolescent, why are political parties and the interests of these groups of people not obsolescent?

There should be no divisive lines or party lines anymore. Belong to a country is a bigger scale of belonging to a political party, identifying and protecting a bigger group of citizens or a smaller group of party members.

It is ironical to read the Sun Zi Art of War in French or English, when the strategy was conceptualised and written in the earlier form of our mother tongue.

Nevermind the policy, what is important is that we don't give up on our cultural roots. Why should we if the Western publication deems worthwhile to translate the ancient text into so many foreign languages ?

To prepare our next generation for the Asian century with the rapid rise of CHINA, INDIA and INDONESIA, apart from learning French and English as an international language for making international and Singaporean friends, we should also persuade our young to re-connect be proud of our Asian roots like the Koreans and Japanese.

Like the minority in many countries, we can deepen our knowledge and understanding of some of our finest literary works, moral teachings, philosophy in our mother tongues be it Tamil, Mandarin or Malay through self-upgrading.

@ ANONYMOUS 19 May 2013 3.00 pm

ANONYMOUS, so that is your “grand theory” ............ !

Look who is “obviously talking to himself”!

ANONYMOUS “talking to” ANONYMOUS “himself”!

( CLUE: Check out some of the ANONYMOUS comments in this post )

The world “can feel your agony” playing the role of your “schizophrenic self”. ( Sigh ....... how sad. )

Your “malicious attempt” to “mimic me” and “insinuate it is written by me “ isn't convincing.

Perhaps, ANONYMOUS, YOU should have wrote some parts in Chinese to “make it sound more believable that it is written by me”. UNFORTUNATELY, for OBVIOUS reasons, you can't.

Nonetheless, you have given the issue on hand a “historical perspective” if you know what I mean.

( Suggestion to ANONYMOUS: you may wish to “thicken” the “plot” next time with some readings of Agatha Christie and Sherlock Holmes. In addition, in order to make your “schizophrenic characters you are trying to mimic more “convincing”, you may also wish to read some “Chinese Classics” in Chinese to help you write some parts in ancient “Chinese” lingua. That way your “story plots” would have less obvious give-away signs in this instance. Those ANONYMOUS comments that you try to “mimic me” would sound more “like me” and become more “believable”. The current “plot” is rather “obvious” and “sharp eye” readers can easily “see through”. ANONYMOUS, even your current attempt to “mimic me” in English fails so badly because I don't write like that. There are so many parts that sound just YOU – ANONYMOUS! If you insist that I “take your argument apart again”, even without mentioning YOU directly, readers likely would have known WHO ANONYMOUS is. Nonetheless, your current attempts may be entertaining read for some people. Incidentally, it would also likely increase the traffic in this “blogsite”, if that was not your intention.

Word of caution: “Schizophrenic” pesonality should see doctors immediately and follow doctors' advice . Some may become “psychotic” and that can be “dangerous”. )

( English Dictionary description of schizophrenia:

noun
Psychiatry. Also called dementia praecox.
A severe mental disorder characterized by some, but not necessarily all, of the following features: emotional blunting, intellectual deterioration, social isolation, disorganized speech and behavior, delusions, and hallucinations.
A state characterized by the coexistence of contradictory or incompatible elements. )

PS. ANONYMOUS, in case you did not realise, you had unwittingly admitted in your own “grand theory” that you have to read Sun Tze's Art of War in English or French translation. If all those ANONYMOUS stuff are “written by me”, does it make any sense that I read Sun Tze's Art of War in French or English translation and be fed second, third or fourth hand information when I can get first hand information in Chinese? ANONYMOUS, don't you think YOUR subconscious thought ( in your schizophrenic character's style and content of writing ) have given YOUR identity away?

Any intelligent guess who ANONYMOUS ( aka “ ANONYMOUS talking to himself “) is?
